Patara was an ancient and flourishing maritime and commercial city near the village of Gelemiş (Kalkan) in the Kaş district of Antalya, and for a period the capital of Lycia. As one of the six cities of the Lycian League holding three votes, it hosted league assemblies in its council building and was noted by Herodotus as a sacred centre of the god Apollo.
