Editor's Note
The Tophane Fountain, also known as the Fountain of Mahmud I, stands in Tophane Square in Istanbul and was commissioned by the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud I in 1732. It is the third-largest fountain in Istanbul and the city's tallest walled fountain. Its construction inaugurated the Taksim water supply system; over time, land reclamation moved the shoreline away from the fountain.
