The Halki Seminary (Theological School of Halki) stands on the island of Heybeliada (Halki) in the Princes' Islands, at the top of the island's Hill of Hope, on the site of the Byzantine-era Monastery of the Holy Trinity. Founded on 1 October 1844, it served as the main theological school of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople until the Turkish parliament banned private higher education institutions in 1971, after which it was closed. The premises are still maintained by the monastery and are used to host conferences. The island can be reached by boat in about an hour from the Istanbul shore.
