On the lush slopes of Büyükada, rising in tranquility with its view over the Marmara, the Trotsky House bears witness to the exile years of Leon Trotsky, the most controversial political figure of the 20th century, during his time in Turkey. The Russian revolutionary, who lived here between 1929 and 1933, was one of the architects of the red ideology whose echoes spread across the world. The mansion, with its elegant rooms, blends the Ottoman and Western architectural styles of the era in harmony. The years Trotsky spent on this island writing and developing his theories were a refuge he found against Stalin's pursuit. With its narrow dead-end streets and old garden, it still offers visitors a quiet intellectual retreat today. Be sure to see the original documents and photographs in the museum archive, and you can round off your contemplative journey in the gentle breeze blowing from the island's shore.
