Story
Set on a wooded slope of the Princes' Islands, the Dimitri Bey House was built in the late nineteenth century by a Greek family enriched through trade networks. With its wooden railings, stone-framed windows, and deeply carved door motifs, this structure displays a rare harmony of Levantine and Ottoman architecture. The house, one of the centers of island life in the early Republican period, reflects the comfort of that age through its crystal chandeliers and tiled fireplace. Its most interesting feature is the flawless blend of Greek Pera-style window openings with Ottoman woodwork. It is the best-preserved Levantine mansion remaining on the island. A visiting tip: gazing out at the Bosphorus from its balcony at sunset, and observing the building's architecture during the island's quiet hours, is the most rewarding.
