Story
This original sebil of the Sultan Ahmet Complex is one of the finest examples of the charitable architecture of the complex built in the seventeenth century. In the Ottoman tradition, sebils fulfilled religious and social duties by offering free water to the public; this one, too, stands just beside the Sultanahmet Mosque, reinforcing the grandeur of the building. Decorated with marble and stonework, the structure reflects authentic Ottoman aesthetics through its geometric patterns and Islamic motifs. While a sebil's most important function was providing access to water, this structure is also a work of art and a symbol of communal solidarity. Holding an important place in the cultural richness of the Fatih district, this sebil is a detail visitors do not overlook while exploring Sultanahmet Square.
