Story

The Panagia Blachernae Sacred Spring is a holy fountain center in the heart of Fatih, dedicated to the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary). Carried from the Byzantine period to the present, this center of spirituality draws attention with its fine stone-built architecture and quiet courtyard, rising around a sacred spring whose water is said to bring healing. For centuries it has been the destination of both Christian and Muslim visitors in their search for faith. Traditional lore tells that the water of the source has therapeutic power against ailments of the eyes, skin, and nerves; even today many people believe in the miracles of the sacramental water here. It was also held in respect during the Ottoman period and is one of the important monuments carrying the religious and cultural identity of Fatih. Visiting tip: come in the morning hours, when you can wash your face with the water flowing from the source and meditate in the quiet setting of the site.
