Story
High above the Fener district, commanding a position over the narrow streets, the Ayia Anna Sacred Spring (ayazma) is a silent witness that carries the spiritual heritage of the Byzantine era into the present day. The word ayazma derives from a Byzantine tradition denoting water sources considered sacred, and this structure too reflects the spiritual world of those distant times. Around this building, countless visitors and believers have sought peace over the centuries. Its stone walls and every part of its old architecture tell the story of Istanbul's layered history. Retaining its importance during the Ottoman period as well, this monument is one of the symbolic structures of Fener, where different faiths lived side by side. Its visiting hours have shifted to the early morning; to fully feel its murmuring sound and spiritual atmosphere, it is recommended that you go at dawn.
