Peterek (Pertekrek) Castle stands in Çevreli village, formerly called Pertekrek, in the Yusufeli district of Artvin. The Peterek sanjak, which shared the village's name, was conquered in 1549 by Ahmed Pasha, sent during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent to counter threats from Georgian lords. After its conquest the sanjak passed through various administrative changes and is thought to have been abolished in the early 19th century.
