Zile Castle sits on a mound in the centre of the Zile district of Tokat, commanding the Zile Plain. Based on architectural fragments and inscriptions from the Roman and Byzantine periods found around it, the castle is thought to date to the 1st century AD. Variations in the height of its walls, the shapes of its towers, and the masonry show that it was used over a long period with repairs and additions in different eras.
