Editor's Note
Akçakoca Castle, known locally as the Genoese Castle, was built on the edge of a high cliff about 3 kilometres west of the town centre in the Akçakoca district of Düzce. An important stop on the Genoese trade route, it is thought to have been built between 1204 and 1261, in the period of Latin or Nicaean rule. UNESCO added the castle to its World Heritage Tentative List in 2013.
