Sinop Fortress is a historic castle built on the peninsula where the city of Sinop stands. Founded in the 7th century BC to protect the city, it was repaired several times during the Roman, Byzantine and Anatolian Seljuk periods. Its walls, about 2,050 metres long, 25 metres high and 3 metres wide, surround the city and have two main gates. It was included in the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.
