Contributing to the natural heritage of central Bolu, the Akkaya Travertines are white-and-yellow stone formations in which geological time is written layer upon layer. Over millions of years, mineral-rich waters seeping to the surface from underground sources crystallized over time to create these mesmerizing travertines. Since ancient times, the inhabitants of this region were well aware of Akkaya's valuable stone material and put it to magnificent use in architectural works. The most fascinating feature of the travertines is the natural growth process that continues even today, with new layers of stone forming year after year, turning the area into a living geological laboratory.
