Editor's Note
Hisarlik is the mound in present-day Çanakkale that holds the ancient city of Troy, best known as the setting of the Greek myth of the Trojan War. Over 4,000 years of settlement the city was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, producing nine archaeological layers (Troy I to IX). First settled around 3600 BC, in the Late Bronze Age it was called Wilusa and was a vassal of the Hittite Empire. Excavated from 1871 by Frank Calvert and Heinrich Schliemann, the site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998.
