Editor's Note
Labraunda is an ancient sanctuary about 5 km west of Ortaköy in Muğla Province, set in the mountains of Caria. Held sacred by both Carians and Mysians and surrounded by sacred plane trees, it was enriched in Hellenistic style by the Hecatomnid dynasty of Mausolus and his brother Idrieus in the 4th century BC, serving as the dynasty's ancestral shrine. Its cult was dedicated to a local Zeus Labrandeus, depicted holding the double-headed axe (labrys). Remains of Hellenistic houses and streets can still be traced, and numerous inscriptions survive; the site remained occupied until the mid-Byzantine period.
