Story
Seyit Onbaşı Anıtı stands at Rumeli Mecidiye Tabyası in Eceabat and symbolizes the soldiers who resisted the Allied fleet attempting to pass through the strait on March 18, 1915, as well as Seyit Onbaşı's role in that defense. Born in 1889 in Manastır village in the Havran district of Edremit, Seyit served as a heavy-artillery private at Çanakkale Müstahkem Mevkii from 1914 to 1918. Following the 1934 Surname Law, he took the surname Çabuk. After his discharge, he returned to his village and earned a living by producing and selling charcoal. He died of pneumonia on December 1, 1939, at the age of 50, and his grave is now in his home village.
