The First Martyrs' Monument is one of the most important symbols defining the historic identity of Eceabat. Built in memory of the heroes who defended their homeland during the first days of the Battle of Gallipoli, this monument, carved from stone and well preserved, stands in a posture of respect facing the sea. The monument is set on one of the strategic hills of the Gallipoli Peninsula, carrying visitors back to the hard days of 1915. Most of the first martyrs who gave the monument its name were young men who lost their lives in the bitter chaos at the war's outset. The historic structures and graves surrounding the monument bear witness to the violence of that era. When you visit Eceabat, it is best to come to the monument in the early morning; at those hours the sun's rays bathe it in golden light while the sea view is at its most beautiful.
