Story

On the beach of Sarıgerme in Ortaca, between Kalynda and Kaunos, lay a small harbour city, also known in antiquity as Panormos. Its fate was decided not by a war but by a river: the Dalaman stream, which changed its bed three times during the Holocene, filled the plain with heavy alluvium, and Pisilis, like its western neighbour Kaunos, lost its direct link to the sea and was left inland. Cut off from the sea routes, with the land closing in around it, the city lost its function and was in time abandoned. No comprehensive systematic excavation has been carried out here; what is known rests on surface survey.

  • Near the shoreline, large fragments of pithoi were found, used to store goods such as olive oil and wine arriving at the harbour.
  • On the slopes outside the walls stretches a broad necropolis with simple rock-cut graves alongside tile-roofed burials.
