Story
Where the village of Kermeyan in Malkara stands there was a Thracian settlement on the Via Egnatia. In the middle of the first century AD, probably in connection with Claudius' annexation of Thrace, it was refounded as Colonia Claudia Aprensis and laid out for retired members of the Roman army. After the capture of Constantinople in 1204, Henry of Flanders attacked the city and killed many of its citizens; in 1206 Tsar Kaloyan of Bulgaria destroyed it and Theodore Branas, its lord, rebuilt it. In July 1305, at the battle of Apros, the Catalan Company annihilated the Byzantine imperial army here under Michael IX.
