In the village of Damlıboğaz in Milas, on the summit of a steep rocky hill in the valley opening onto the gulf of Güllük, stood a Carian town. Its name does not appear in ancient authors; we know it existed from inscriptions, and Hydai means water in Greek. The town is known to have been founded in 478 BC, but finds from the cemetery exposed when the Sarıçay shifted its bed show occupation in the area reaching back to the third millennium BC. The site has been looted since 1970; because a single buyer collected almost all the pottery taken from it, the group survived intact and was bought by a museum in 2001. The Damlıboğaz material is now regarded as one of the richest collections in the world.
