Fifteen kilometres east of Tekirdağ, on the mound near the village of Karaevli, stood the city of Hera. Colonists from Samos founded it around 600 BC, and surface evidence shows unbroken occupation from 2000 BC at the latest through to the Byzantine period. Excavation uncovered the tandır-shaped ovens described in ancient sources, and analysis confirmed they were used to make medicine; only one of them was recovered intact and is kept in the museum. When Philip II besieged the city in 352 BC, Athens voted to send a fleet of forty-three triremes and to raise sixty talents in tax, but that fleet never sailed; later only ten ships and five talents were sent.
