Nicomedia, formerly Astakos, was an ancient Greek city founded by King Nicomedes I of Bithynia at the head of the Gulf of İzmit opening onto the Sea of Marmara. In 286 AD it became the eastern and most senior capital of the Roman Empire, a status it kept during the Tetrarchy.
