Story
A Bithynian town placed around the Hersek delta in Altınova. Constantine renamed it Helenopolis in honour of his mother Helena; the claim that this was her birthplace has spread as false information. Justinian added an aqueduct, baths and other monuments, but these are not thought to have made the town grow: playing on its name, people called it Eleinou Polis, the miserable town. Nearby stood the castle of Civetot, built by Alexios I Komnenos for the Anglo-Saxon mercenaries who chose to flee England after the Norman conquest; a study in 2019 found the castle's remains three and a half metres underwater in the Hersek lagoon.
