Story
Where the village of Misinli in Ergene now stands lay a Roman town on the road from Edirne to Byzantium. It had a basilica dedicated to Saint Alexander, martyred here under Maximian; in AD 591 the Avar khagan took the town, burned the church and looted the silver-covered relics of the martyr. Murad I conquered it in the fourteenth century, and in 1453 the wife of Grand Duke Lukas Notaras died here. Its end came not through destruction but through competition: in the fifteenth century Bayezid II had a new town, Büyükkarıştıran, built a few kilometres to the west, and the new settlement quickly displaced the old one.

Did you know
- As Ptolemy notes, the town lay on the Via Egnatia along the route from Hadrianopolis to Byzantium.
- Only two of its recorded archbishops are known by name: Theodore, at the Second Council of Constantinople in 553, and Cyriacus, at the Second Council of Nicaea in 787.
- The settlement was described in 1432 by Bertrandon de la Broquière.
