Its name is welded from two languages: Greek for holy and Latin for belonging to Caesar. This Lydian town, standing between Sazoba village in Akhisar and Kumkuyucak in Saruhanlı, Manisa, is also known as Hierakome, and Ptolemy mentions it. Its coins show that the Persian Artemis was worshipped here; in Hellenistic and Roman times local goddesses were usually identified with Greek or Roman deities, yet cults of Persian origin survived alongside them. The town stayed in the episcopal lists into the twelfth or thirteenth century, but only three of its bishops are known.
