Patara was a small but strategic ancient city on the borders of ancient Cappadocia or Lesser Armenia, later incorporated into the region of Pontus in Roman and Byzantine times. It lay on the main military and trade road network running from Trapezus on the Black Sea coast to the frontier legionary base of Satala, and on toward Lake Van through eastern Anatolia.

- In the later Roman and Byzantine periods the town was attached to the region of Pontus; in ancient terms it fell within Cappadocia or Lesser Armenia.
- Satala is in today's Kelkit district of Gümüşhane.
- The Lycian Patara of the same name is on the coast at Kaş, Antalya, and has no geographical or historical connection with this settlement.
- The site has been localised to the Karayayla locality of Yağlıdere village thanks to its entry on the Tabula Peutingeriana.
