Patara was a small but strategic ancient city on the borders of ancient Cappadocia or Lesser Armenia, later incorporated into the region of Pontus in Roman and Byzantine times. It lay on the main military and trade road network running from Trapezus on the Black Sea coast to the frontier legionary base of Satala, and on toward Lake Van through eastern Anatolia.

This Patara shares nothing but its name with the famous Lycian capital on the Mediterranean: it lies around the Karayayla locality of Yağlıdere village in central Gümüşhane, a small station in the mountain passes of the Black Sea region. It stood on the military and trade route running from Trapezus, today's Trabzon, to Satala, one of the empire's critical frontier legionary bases, and on across eastern Anatolia towards Lake Van. It is listed plainly on the Roman road map known as the Tabula Peutingeriana. It was a fortified staging post built to keep caravans and legions safe.
