Story

This city in the Troad, 12 km from Çanakkale, was among the earliest coin-minting settlements of the region; its coins read DAR and DARDAN and carry a striking fighting-cock motif. Its electrum, silver and bronze issues run from the sixth to the fourth century BC, and because the silver follows the Persian standard, the city is thought to have been under Persian rule for a time. In 85 BC Mithridates of Pontus and the Roman commander Sulla concluded the Peace of Dardanos here. Its tumulus lies within the bounds of Çınarlı village in central Çanakkale.
