The ancient city of Tralleis lies in the north of Aydın province, on a broad, high plateau on the southern slope of Mount Mesogis (Kestane Dağı). Ancient sources placed it sometimes in Caria and sometimes in Lydia, and according to Strabo it was settled by a people as wealthy as those of other Anatolian cities, with some of its residents rising to important posts in other provinces.
