Six hundred rock-cut churches monks carved into Cappadocia's volcanic tuff between the 4th and 12th centuries.
Story
Between the 4th and 12th centuries, Cappadocian monks carved more than six hundred churches into the volcanic tuff of this single valley. The frescoes inside — Pantocrator Christs, Gospel cycles, donor portraits — survived because the cones were too brittle to whitewash. The Tokalı Kilise alone took two centuries of painting and re-painting; the Karanlık Kilise pigments still glow.
