Story
The Iznik Tile Museum houses a dazzling treasury of Ottoman art. The ceramics produced between the 15th and 17th centuries in the town of Iznik near Bursa adorned the walls of Istanbul's most magnificent mosques, including Topkapi Palace and even the Suleymaniye Mosque. The tiles on display weave geometric and botanical motifs across their surfaces with extraordinarily refined craftsmanship in turquoise blue, sea green, and iridescent red. Imitated throughout Europe, Iznik tile-making even influenced Venetian ceramics, and for this reason the famed 'Ottoman blue' became a legend in the world of art. Examining the tiles and panels from the era of Sultan Murad at the museum offers an occasion to look deeply into the art history of the Empire. During your visit, following a guide is recommended in order to focus on the details of this golden age of tile art.
