Story
Malazgirt Castle, located in the Malazgirt district of Muş province, is a historic structure that symbolizes Anatolia's passage into Turkish rule. Following the victory won by the Seljuk army under the command of Alp Arslan against the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, this region became a turning point in Turkey's geopolitical and cultural development. Built of stone and earth, the castle has survived to the present day with its walls, eroded over time, and its defensive towers. On the wide plain surrounding it, traces of ancient settlements and the remains of medieval works are scattered. Especially at sunset, the castle's silhouette harmonizes with Muş's mountainous landscape to form a magnificent view. Sources written after the battle contain detailed information about the castle's strategic location and Seljuk architecture. As a point where the Silk Road trade routes intersected, the region served as a center of economic and cultural exchange. Finding a local guide before exploring the castle will help you better understand its historical layers.
