Editor's Note
Leucophrys was a town in the plain of the Maeander River, belonging to ancient Caria and later to Ionia. It stood on the shore of a lake whose water was hot and in constant commotion, and it possessed a highly revered sanctuary of Artemis, who was here surnamed Artemis Leucophryene. The poet Nicander praised the town for its fine roses. According to Xenophon, in 398 BCE Greek troops under the Spartan commander Dercylidas withdrew here and negotiated peace with the Persian satraps the following day.
