Mehmed II's Bosphorus chokepoint, built in four months in 1452 to strangle Constantinople by sea.
Editor's Note
Rumelihisarı (the "Strait-cutter Fortress") is an Ottoman fortress on the European bank of the Bosphorus in Istanbul's Sarıyer district. Built on the orders of Sultan Mehmed II in 1451–1452, ahead of the conquest of Constantinople, it was placed at the narrowest point of the strait, directly opposite Anadoluhisarı, to cut off maritime relief from the Black Sea. Spread over some 32,000 m², its three great towers are among the largest fortress keeps in the world.
