The Battle of Ankara was fought in 1402 on the Çubuk plain northeast of Ankara between the Ottoman state and Timur's empire. It ended in a decisive victory for Timur, who captured the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I, plunging the state into the roughly eleven-year leaderless period known as the Ottoman Interregnum.
