Story
A small Neolithic settlement of 80 by 70 metres, 3 km southeast of Enez, named after a fountain by the Keşan road. A strong freshwater spring rises just below the rock. Found in 1989, it was excavated between 1990 and 1993 over 700 square metres under Mehmet Özdoğan, as part of the Enez, ancient Ainos, campaign. The lowest layer holds two circular structures 4.5 metres across, made by cutting some 20 centimetres into the rock, and the settlement was partly enclosed by a wall a metre thick. The material resembles the Early Neolithic of Bulgaria more than that of Anatolia.

Did you know
- The excavator, Mehmet Özdoğan, calls Hoca Çeşme one of the most important Neolithic centres not only of Thrace but of the Balkans.
- Radiocarbon dates give 6500-6000 BC for layers IV and III and 6030-5710 BC for layer II, making the site older than the Karanovo I culture of Bulgaria.
- No hunting or weapon material such as arrow and spear points was found; the animal bones are largely domesticated sheep and pig.
- One hallmark of the Hoca Çeşme culture is the long-handled, broad and shallow bone spoon, produced here in quantity.
