Editor's Note
The Derinkuyu Underground City is a city carved into the rock in the Derinkuyu district about 30 km from Nevşehir, in the Cappadocia region. It was discovered in 1963 and opened to visitors in 1967. Although its exact date is unknown, it is thought to have been used in the Proto-Hittite, Hittite, Roman and Byzantine periods. Built for prolonged shelter, it contains a church, stables, a winery, water wells, food stores and ventilation shafts.
