Colophon was an ancient city in Ionia, one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League. Founded around the end of the 2nd millennium BC, it was likely one of the league's oldest cities. Situated between Lebedos and Ephesus, its ruins lie south of the town of Değirmendere in the Menderes district of İzmir Province.

One of the twelve Ionian cities, in the Değirmendere quarter of Menderes, İzmir. Colophon's distinction is simple: it is the only Ionian settlement not founded on the sea. The city spread over three hills and the valleys between them, and its walls, dated to the fourth century BC, can still be traced in stretches along the hilltops where they use the natural rock. Until Gyges of Lydia took it in the seventh century BC it was famous for its cavalry and for the luxury of its inhabitants; then it declined and was quickly overshadowed by Ephesus. Many of its people fled to Notion, which came to be called New Colophon, or Colophon by the Sea.
