Colophon was an ancient city in Ionia, one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League. Founded around the end of the 2nd millennium BC, it was likely one of the league's oldest cities. Situated between Lebedos and Ephesus, its ruins lie south of the town of Değirmendere in the Menderes district of İzmir Province.

- Notion, where part of the population fled, is modern Ahmetbeyli; it came to be called New Colophon or Colophon by the Sea.
- Church records name Sosthenes and Tychicus as first bishops, but the historically documented ones are Eulalius at the Council of Ephesus in 431 and Alexander, represented at Chalcedon in 451.
- As a suffragan of Ephesus, Colophon stayed in the episcopal lists into the twelfth or thirteenth century.
