Editor's Note
Based on studies carried out on the cistern's vault, the dimensions of the fired clay bricks and the joint mortar suggest that the structure can be dated to the Byzantine period, the 10th-12th centuries. However, what must be kept in mind is that this dating applies to the cistern's vault. At this stage of the work it is not possible to date the body of the cistern, which was carved into the natural rock. In other words, there is a possibility that the cistern was carved into the rock in another period and that its vault was built later, in a Byzantine period, after which it continued to be used.
