Editor's Note
Eskihisar Castle is a historical structure located in the Eskihisar neighbourhood of Kocaeli's Gebze district. The castle was built during the Byzantine Empire and was set at a strategic point to control the sea route and harbour in the Gulf of Izmit. Its construction took place in three phases: the inner castle and walls were built in the 12th century under Emperor Manuel I Komnenos. The outer defensive (peche) walls were added in 1241, in the time of the Nicaean Emperor John III Doukas Vatatzes. The outer walls and the tower section were completed in the early 14th century during the Palaiologos dynasty.
