Editor's Note
In the 16th century, the cotton merchant Mustafa Efendi of Egypt built a mosque, as the charitable endowment of an Egyptian benefactress, on the site of today's Merkez (Central) Mosque. Built of timber, the mosque was largely destroyed by a fire; the mihrab and the portico (last-congregation area) that form the lower floor of the present mosque have survived. The mosque seen today was built in 1908, when the walls of the mosque, which had been left low-lying by stream floods, were raised and widened.
