Editor's Note
The town now lies beneath the present-day centre of the Gerze district. The first settlement at Gerze began with the Kaška people in the 15th century BC, and it later came under Hittite, Lydian, Persian, Greek, Roman and Eastern Roman rule, finally continuing under the Ottomans. It is thought to have taken the name Karoussa in the 4th–3rd century BC.
