No surviving archaeological remains have been identified in the area where Harmene was located. It is first mentioned by Xenophon (Anabasis VI, I.14–17), who camped here for five days with the "Ten Thousand" in 401/400 BC. Because Xenophon and his army were not admitted into the city of Sinope, the army was forced to camp here for five days. About half a century later (probably around 330 BC), the Periplus attributed to Scylax but not actually written by him (Pseudo-Scylax) refers to Harmene as a Hellenic city with a harbour (Periplus, 89).
