Editor's Note
This is a rest stop and roadside monument built by Gaius Julius Aquila, who was appointed Governor of Bithynia-Pontus after serving as commander of the Eastern Provinces' Construction Legion during the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius Claudius Germanicus (AD 41–54). It consists of a headless statue carved into the rock, an eagle figure atop a column, and two inscriptions. The inscriptions read: "In the name of peace and friendship between nations, and in memory of the rule of Emperor Germanicus, Gaius Julius Aquila cut through the mountain and built this rest stop at his own private expense."
