Editor's Note
The building was commissioned in 1442 by a man named Mezit Bey. The soup kitchen that once stood beside it has not survived. Set within a large garden, the mosque has an inverted-T plan of the type known as zaviyeli (lodge-type) or tabhaneli (with guest rooms). Some sections were built of rubble stone, others in alternating courses, and still others in finely dressed ashlar. The mosque is covered by a total of four domes: two domes aligned toward the qibla, and two lower domes over the side wings. Four windows in two rows are set into each of the two side walls and the qibla wall of the mihrab hall.
