The area where the barracks stand was once a wooded grove belonging to the gardens of the old palace, until a pavilion was built here during the reign of Mehmed IV. With buildings added in 1819, the barracks took the name "Yeni Tophane," and in 1877-1878 major changes converted the structure into a military hospital. In 1906 it was turned into barracks by Lieutenant General Memduh Pasha, who added the Reserve Office and other buildings. Of the barracks' structures, the military hospital, the pavilion, and the cannon-foundry buildings have survived to the present. Because it was used as an Industrial School between 1902 and 1914, the structure was given the name Industrial Barracks.
