It was built by Fenarî el-Hac Ahmed Efendi, the proprietor of the adjacent Tahtakale Bathhouse. According to Ahmed Efendi, who died while on pilgrimage, after having a scholar interpret a dream he had one night, he was told that an endowment belonging to Sultan Murad II would be revived through him. When Ahmed Efendi had the deeds of the Tahtakale Bathhouse examined, it emerged that there had indeed been a masjid dating to the reign of Murad II adjoining the bathhouse, that as it fell into ruin over time a tree had been planted on its plot, and that a shop, used at the time as a barbershop, had been built there.
