Editor's Note
It is the largest synagogue in the Balkans and the third largest in Europe. It was completely destroyed in the 1905 fire and rebuilt in 1907 by an edict of Sultan Abdülhamid II. The French architect France Depré designed the building, drawing inspiration from the Leopoldstädter Tempel synagogue in Vienna. The building was completed with the financial support of community members in Germany, Hungary, and other countries. Actively used until the 1960s, the synagogue remained open for worship until 1983. As the Jewish community left Edirne, it fell out of use and began to fall into ruin.
