The castle lies about 6.4 km northeast of the town centre of Üsküp, in pastureland on a commanding hilltop. Although the largely ruined castle dates to the Byzantine period, both its location and its ceramic finds suggest that the site was used as a fortress in earlier periods as well. The south, east and west parts of the castle rest on natural bedrock. To the southeast, sections of wall remains built of rubble stone and lime mortar can be seen. The walls are about 170 cm thick. On the east side only a wall built of brick and lime mortar survives.
