It was built in 1859. It is thought to have stood at the Gerdanlı Bayırı locality in the Hacı Zekeriya (Doğu) district. Yannis S. Yanakopulos relates that permission for the church's construction was initially refused because it lay within a hundred paces of a tomb; later, noting that there was no other town in the Ottoman state with forty lodges named Kırkkilise, the establishment of the Forty Saints' Church was requested again, and because the church's name was identical with the town's name, in Edirne...
