Editor's Note
The Kveli Monastery was dedicated to John the Baptist. According to the hagiography The Life of Serapion of Zarzma, this monastery was founded in the 9th–10th century by Serapion's brother Ioane. To this day, villagers still call a spot near Kveli Castle the "Kol Monastery." Kveli Church, the monastery's main church, stood on the mountainside northeast of Kveli Castle. Its walls survived until the 1980s, but the structure was completely destroyed when terraces were cut into the slope where the church stood.
